Jaime is someone who understands the implications of a paradigm shift. Born in Chile, he grew up in a household where differing economic ideologies were hotly debated as the country transitioned through a deepening economic and political crisis. Jaime and his immediate family moved to Canada a year after the military coup by Agusto Pinochet in 1973. While Pinochet imposed a highly disputed reign of terror, his other reforms included an overhaul of Chile’s debt based economic system which allowed it to become one of the best performing economies in the world. It was one of Jaime’s earliest experiences of how a challenging economic period can lead to a prosperous economy.
Jaime, whose mother tongue is Spanish, also speaks Italian and French, and completed a BA in political science and economics at the University of Toronto in 1988. While a student, he worked for CS Yacht, a company that built luxury sail boats, thus spending his summers as a skipper for members of the Canadian establishment. Jaime credits this experience, and having survived sailing through Hurricane Bob in 1991, for learning lessons that have become a metaphor for his financial investment strategies.
